| The mighty Cessnock Goannas sport the yellow and black, and now their home town boasts a 1200 seat state of the art sportsground facility decked in their colours. Baddeley Park, a $6.3 million 18 month project designed by Rudy O’Laco of Kinsley + Associates, has already secured strong community support. “Not only will this complex be the new major rugby league facility in Cessnock, it will provide great opportunities in the future for regional, state and even national sporting and community events,” said Cessnock Mayor John Clarence. “Any rural town would be proud to have such a quality venue.” The sportsground incorporates fully floodlit playing and training fields with sub-soil drainage, automatic irrigation and fencing. In a region vulnerable to drought, stormwater from the grandstand’s roof is captured and channelled to a tank above and below the ground and recycled for use in the toilets and field irrigation. The east-facing grandstand, containing media and function rooms above and kiosks, change rooms and amenities beneath, is protected by the deep overhang of the roof for most of the day. Its sweeping form is supported by an exposed structural system of angled steel struts embedded behind. The structural connection is a feature of the grandstand’s rear access way. Here, structure doubles as utility, with a yellow colonnade providing a guided and shaded means of crowd organisation. The complex was specifically designed for full disability access. The grandstand is essentially constructed of Australian materials, with Luxalon cladding featuring above the colonnade. The racked seating was achieved efficiently with a Rescrete precast concrete seating plate. The project also delivered new carparking, and a spectator mound and secondary amenities block on the eastern side of the ground. Kinsley + Associates, led by Roger Kinsley, Managing Director, is uniquely positioned to deliver a coordinated architectural and engineering design solution. Retaining a permanent team with a diverse range of professional expertise in commercial, industrial and institutional projects, Kinsley are able to offer architectural, structural, electrical, hydraulic and mechanical disciplines - as well as project management and design and construction services - in-house. Baddeley Park was planned in close liaison with Cessnock City Council, a body with a long history and an interest in building an iconic structure for their town. The Hunter Region is richer for it. +
