Challenged by some of Australia’s most recognised designers to create unique sculptural lighting features for their prestige projects, 2008 was a busy and creatively charged year for The Custom Lighting division of Di Emme Creative Solutions Pty Ltd.
Di Emme’s Director Robert Gonda accredits their success to a vast understanding of materials and a highly tuned sensibility to form. “We create artistic sculptural statements that illuminate. Every project is different and we draw on our experience, intuition and ability to communicate so that our illumination elements complement and express the design vision of each project.”
Prominent restaurant designer Michael McCann of Dreamtime Australia Design has previously commissioned Di Emme for such cutting edge projects as Restaurant 360 and Pump House. Most recently, Di Emme provided feature and mood setting lighting elements for the newly opened Steel Bar and Grill. The ‘Cocoon Light’ disperses ambient light in the Steel Bar’s private dining area whilst the stainless steel ‘Nest Lamp’ sculptures provide accented lighting for the bar and veranda. The stainless steel amenity rooms are warmed by the theatrical glow of the ‘Egg Lamps’.
Di Emme was also commissioned by BeeDesign to create a lighting element that would visually connect spaces through Sean’s Bar and Grill in Star City Casino. Inspired by the bull fighting brief, Di Emme fabricated matador cape forms that were both theatrical and dramatic. The varying hanging levels of the lighting elements served to visually guide patrons through the bar and dining areas.
Dexus Management’s brief for The Zenith Centre required visual solutions for both day and night viewing. In response, Di Emme designed the ‘Bell Cones’ lighting element – a PVC sculptural form with a milky translucent palette to complement the atrium architecture for daytime viewing. The Bell Cones are lined with LED lights, programmed to fade through the colours of the rainbow, in order to transform the sculpture’s daytime modernistic personality to a kinetic and welcoming one at night.
Di Emme has designed everything from coral lights to light diffusing mobiles; sleek lights for the Park Hyatt to bead lights for The Loft. Recently, their custom lighting elements were included in Bates Smart’s redesign of Neil Perry’s Rockpool (Fish) and the prestigious POST, retail and office redevelopment by Burley Katon Halliday.
Di Emme’s experience in creative lighting is expert, and the diversity of their solutions is exemplified through the variety of high profile briefs that they have creatively and successfully addressed.
