 Daniel Haskell is the sole director of Melbourne-based architectural firm Haskell Architects. Founded in 2002, the practice has undertaken a broad range of work including residential and public buildings, master planning and education projects.

Known for creating innovative buildings with a contemporary aesthetic, Haskell's work is diverse and client-driven. His practice recently completed the Hippopotamus Exhibit at Werribee Open Range Zoo, a major achievement which has won several awards. His current work includes the Rural Replacement Program for primary schools across regional Victoria, to be completed over four years; a church in Melbourne's western suburbs; and various community facilities and commercial buildings in metropolitan Melbourne such as Altona Meadows Library and Community Centre (pictured). Why did you decide to become an architect?
I have always loved the process of designing and creating things. My parents tell me that as a youngster I would spend days creating buildings, even cities from lego, I guess that passion led to the inevitable.

What is your most treasured possession?
My two sons, one aged 3 years and the other 4 months.

If you weren't an architect, what would you be?
A 747 pilot.

Your favourite subject at high school?
Physics.

What books do you have on your bedside table?
An assortment of design, travel and aeronautical books as well as "1001 Songs: The Great Songs of All Time and the Artists, Stories and Secrets Behind Them".

In your opinion, what personal qualities make a good architect?
Clear thinking, the ability to get to the central issues, good communication skills and, of course, finding the best design solutions within whatever constraints you are confronted with, be they budgetary, site or client specific.

Who would you most like to design something for?
Myself, on a glorious remote beachfront sloping site.

Favourite tool of the trade?
My PDA. It keeps me connected to my business no matter where I am.

Your greatest extravagance?
Holidays.

Your greatest achievement?
Scraping into architecture at Melbourne University on a second round offer then graduating with Honours.

Best architectural holiday destination?
India. It is packed with architectural gems.

An upcoming international architectural project that excites you?
Torre Bicentenario, Mexico City by Rem Koolhaas and AMA.

A favourite architectural website?
http://archrecord.construction.com/ - the website for the excellent US publication Architectural Record.

What is the biggest challenge you face as an architect?
Delivering great and sustainable architecture within limited budgets.

Best vista?
The Taj Mahal, early in the morning.

Worst blight?
The "Mocks" be they "Mock Georgian", "Mock Tudor", "Mock Victorian", "Mock Federation", "Mock Regency"....

Do you discuss your work with other architects?
Yes, as the sole director of my practice it is great to be able to discuss my work and business issues in general with other architects. In my view, it's an absolute necessity for architects to operate in a collegiate and open manner and contributes to better outcomes for all.

If you could meet one person alive?
Elvis Costello.

One artwork that inspires you is?
Louise Bourgeois' extraordinary sculpture Maman (Mother) in the turbine hall of the Tate Modern - impressive in scale, execution and packs a punch!

Straight line or curved?
Straight line.

The greatest hero from the history of architecture?
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. His work is still relevant and inspirational.

The dastardly villain?
The designers of the "Mocks".

Perfect happiness is...
A satisfied client and knowing I have done my job well.

Any advice for the young?
Persevere, be creative, take calculated risks and enjoy the fruits of your labour.
